Athlete are an English indie rock/"casio rock" (that's what they call it themselves) band. Their sound is a mix of indie rock and electronic music, most recently intergrating "organic sounds" into their music. Friends since the age of fourteen, Athlete have wide ranging influences that include Grandaddy and The Flaming Lips (more detailed information about the band's influences can be found on their Last.fm user profile).
They started jamming and practicing in the basement of The Bear, a pub which was converted into a church and sandwich bar, on Deptford High Street in 1999. They began recording here before sending demos out. Signing with Regal Recordings, they released their first single in February '02.
The band came to prominence in 2003 when their debut album - Vehicles and Animals - produced popular singles "You Got The Style", "El Salvador", "Beautiful" and "Westside" (previously named "Rockscene" on the Athlete EP), which each ranked low in the UK top 40 charts, except "You Got The Style", which reissued in 2003 at #42 in the UK charts. Their second album, Tourist (2005), reached Number One in the UK Album Charts in its first week, producing the #4 single "Wires" in the UK Singles Charts.
In mid-June 2007, the band announced the creation of their third studio album, "Beyond The Neighbourhood". It reached #5 in the UK Album Charts after its release on September 3rd 2007. The single, "Hurricane" has been released from that album and reached #31 in the charts in its first week.
The band consists of:-
* Carey Willets - bass and vocals,
* Joel Pott - guitar and vocals,
* Steve Roberts - drums and backing vocals,
* Tim Wanstall - keyboards and backing vocals.
* Jonny Pilcher - guitar (live, added for "Beyond The Neighbourhood")
